Warning Signs You Should Get Tested for Breast Cancer

Breast cancer symptoms may vary by patient, as what’s considered normal to one woman may not be for another. Please consult our women’s healthcare specialists in Northern Colorado immediately if you’ve noticed any of the following:

  • Lumps in your breasts or underarms
  • Irritation or dimpling of your breast skin
  • Pain or sensitivity around your nipples
  • Nipple discharge other than breast milk
  • Redness or flaky skin on your breasts or nipples
  • Visible thickening or swelling of your breasts
  • Unexplained changes in your breast size or shape

It should be noted that some of these symptoms may be due to other health conditions. Some people with breast cancer may not have any symptoms at all, which is what makes breast cancer screenings so essential to women’s health.

What Factors Increase Your Risk of Developing Breast Cancer?

Aging increases your risk for breast cancer, as most are discovered in women over the age of 50. Other factors that could increase your risk include a personal or family history of breast or ovarian cancer, having dense breasts, being physically inactive or overweight after menopause, taking hormones, or consuming alcohol regularly. Annual breast cancer screenings should begin around the age of 40; earlier if there’s a history of cancer in the family. Women 55 and older without  risk factors or symptoms may choose to schedule their mammograms every two years after consultation with their provider.

What to Expect During a Mammogram at Our Women’s Clinics

Our women’s specialty clinics in Northern Colorado provide state-of-the-art mammograms using Genius 3D™ Mammography. Considered the “gold standard” of diagnostic testing, mammograms are your best defense against breast cancer because they make early detection and treatment possible. Mammos are breast X-rays that require placing your breasts flat on a plastic plate one at a time. Our mammogram suites were designed with your comfort and privacy in mind. 3D imaging allows us to view your breasts from all angles for more accurate breast cancer diagnosis. Most insurance companies cover the additional expenses for 3D mammograms as part of preventative health exams. Be sure to check with your insurance for details about your plan’s coverage.

What Happens If my mammogram is abnormal?

Patients with an abnormal mammogram may be sent to another facility for further testing. In addition to mammograms, your doctor may order a breast ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or a biopsy to confirm a breast cancer diagnosis. If cancer is detected, The Women’s Clinic of Northern Colorado will refer you to a cancer specialist and surgeon.

What Treatment Options Are Available for Breast Cancer?

There are various ways to treat breast cancer, ranging from medication to chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery to remove cancerous tissue. Your doctor will go over various treatment options to help you determine which is the right fit for you. Always keep in mind you are entitled to a second opinion regarding matters involving your health.
