What to Expect During Your Clinical Infertility Evaluation

When you come in for an infertility evaluation at one of our clinics, we’ll likely begin by asking you questions about your medical history and any medicines you take. More in-depth questions may include how often you and your partner have sex, your history of birth control use, whether you have any sexually transmitted diseases, and whether you smoke, drink, or use any illicit drugs. Sometimes even regular caffeine consumption can affect your chances of conception. We’ll also ask about your period’s regularity and if you’ve had any issues with blood clotting, missed periods, or pregnancy miscarriages in the past. We understand these questions may be awkward to answer, but please be as honest and forthcoming as you can with our infertility doctors. It will help us with testing and treatment.

What Does Fertility Testing for Women Typically Involve?

Fertility testing for women usually begins with a Pap smear. This test will determine if you have any sexually transmitted diseases, cervical cancer, or other issues with the cervix which may prevent you from getting pregnant. We may order a blood test to check your hormone levels to see if you’re ovulating correctly or use an ultrasound to examine your vagina, uterus, and pelvic organs more in-depth. We’ll also likely discuss tests for ovulation. These are usually at-home, over-the-counter kits to help you determine which days of the month you’re ovulating by detecting when progesterone is present in the blood. Knowing which days you’re ovulating is valuable because those are the days when medical experts believe that you’re the most fertile. While it’s not a guarantee, calculating ovulation can significantly increase your chances of getting pregnant.

What Treatments Are Available at a Fertility Treatment Center?

Recommended fertility treatments will vary depending on your age, how long you’ve been infertile, and many other factors. Some women benefit from the combination of various treatments. Fertility drugs may help you regulate or even stimulate ovulation if that is the reason for your infertility. Some women seek assisted reproductive technology to help fertilize their eggs with a man’s sperm using either intrauterine insemination or in vitro fertilization techniques. We will refer to infertility specialists for these procedures.  During intrauterine insemination (IUI), sperm are placed inside your uterus at the time of ovulation in the hopes that one or more eggs will be fertilized. During in vitro fertilization, your eggs are extracted and combined with a sperm sample in a lab dish. Once fertilization is complete, the embryo(s) is then put inside your uterus.
